Churches & Monasteries

Churches & Monasteries

Before the 1956 earthquake, Santorini boasted some 260 churches.

Most of those that have survived are of the one-aisled basilica type with blue or white dome, while others are cruciform in shape.Santorini's monasteries are massive, often reminiscent of fortresses, such as the monastery of Profitis Ilias which can be visited on our guided coach excursion.

Each church has a patron saint & many hold a celebration on that day, which often means that apart from the church service, there is food and wine, and sometimes music and dancing.

Visitors on the island are welcome to attend.
